Interactive Guide to the Femoral Nerve

Explore the branches and functions of the largest nerve in the lumbar plexus (L2-L4).

Femoral Nerve Overview

The femoral nerve is the primary nerve of the anterior thigh. It originates from the dorsal divisions of the ventral rami of spinal nerves L2, L3, and L4. After passing beneath the inguinal ligament, it divides into anterior and posterior divisions to supply motor functions to hip flexors and knee extensors, and sensory functions to the skin of the anteromedial thigh, leg, and foot.
